    Brazil will be the host for another Football World Cup in 2014, as it ever was in 1950, and the city of Porto Alegre have a stadium as site of the competition again. Despite of the few kilometers separating the stadiums Beira-Rio and Eucaliptos, this period of time between the two World Cups, turned the role of football stadiums into global scale and specifically in the city of Porto Alegre. Understand the reasons that led the change of function of football stadiums in the city of Porto Alegre urban system is the objective of this work. The research indicates that stadiums were built while others went extinct, following the economic dynamics of the city and the capitalist interests of the real estate industry.

    O Brasil será sede em 2014 de mais uma Copa do Mundo de Futebol, como já foi em 1950, e o município de Porto Alegre, novamente terá um estádio como sede da competição. Apesar dos poucos quilômetros que separam os dois estádios-sede, o Beira-Rio e o Eucaliptos, esse longo intervalo de tempo entre as duas copas do mundo transformou o papel dos estádios de futebol na escala global, assim como em Porto Alegre. Compreender quais os motivos que geraram a mudança de função dos estádios de futebol dentro do sistema urbano de Porto Alegre é o objetivo central deste trabalho. A pesquisa revela que estádios foram construídos enquanto outros foram extintos, acompanhando a dinâmica econômica da cidade e os interesses capitalistas do setor imobiliário.
