  La periodontitis es una patología crónica multifactorial asociada a un desbalance de la biopelícula bacteriana que afecta a más del 90% de la población adulta tanto nacional como internacional. Se vincula con múltiples patologías sistémicas, entre ellas el asma bronquial que presenta una importante prevalencia y altos grados de mortalidad a nivel global, más aún representa un estado de riesgo pulmonar para cualquier otra patología que pueda ingresar a la vía aérea. Por esta razón se han propuesto distintos mecanismos que mediarían la interacción entre la vía oral y pulmonar basados en la unión anatómica de las dos cavidades. De acuerdo con estos antecedentes y la preocupación sanitaria que figuran tanto la periodontitis como el asma bronquial, se hace necesario realizar una investigación exhaustiva para establecer medidas de cuidado.

  El objetivo de esta revisión es describir la relación entre periodontitis y asma bronquial en población adulta, más específicamente, recopilar información acerca del cómo interceden la una en la otra. De este modo ayudará al profesional a tomar las medidas justas de cuidado, confeccionar planes multidisciplinarios de atención, al igual que proporcionar las recomendaciones correspondientes a este tipo de pacientes.

  Periodontitis is a multifactorial chronic pathology associated with an imbalance of the bacterial biofilm that affects more than 90% of the adult population both nationally and internationally. It is linked to multiple systemic pathologies, including bronchial asthma, which has a significant prevalence and high mortality rates globally, and even more so represents a state of pulmonary risk for any other pathology that may enter the airway. For this reason, different mechanisms have been proposed that would mediate the interaction between the oral and pulmonary pathways based on the anatomical union of the two cavities. In accordance with these antecedents and the health concern that appears in both periodontitis and bronchial asthma, it is necessary to carry out an exhaustive investigation to establish care measures.

  The objective of this review is to describe the relationship between periodontitis and bronchial asthma in the adult population, more specifically, to collect information about the consequences between both diseases and how they interfere with each other. In this way, it will help the professional to take the right care measures, prepare multidisciplinary care plans, as well as provide the corresponding recommendations for this type of patient.
