La iglesia de San Martín de La Gineta. Una joya del gótico tardío en La Mancha

    El templo de San Martín es, sin duda, el edificio más emblemático e importante de La Gineta (Albacete). Junto con la iglesia arcedianal de Santiago de Villena (y probablemente bajo su influencia), la capilla mayor de la catedral de Orihuela y la iglesia parroquial de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Utiel, representa uno de los más claros y mejores ejemplos del gótico mediterráneo helicoidal en estas tierras del antiguo Marquesado de Villena, por su variedad de soluciones constructivas dentro del difícil arte de la cantería, y por la admirable utilización de los nervios sogueados en columnas y bóvedas, combinando los soportes fasciculados con perfiles torsos, tanto en arista viva como con boceles. En su construcción intervinieron dos de los más destacados profesionales de la traza y la cantería como Jerónimo Quijano o Juan de Aranguren. El templo de San Martín de La Gineta es, sin lugar a dudas, una verdadera “joya” del gótico tardío en La Mancha. Este estudio pretende ofrecer un mejor conocimiento de sus valores arquitectónicos, a nuestro juicio, muy poco reconocido en la historiografía de la arquitectura española.

    The church of Saint Martin is, without doubt, the most important and emblematic building of La Gineta (Albacete). Along the archdeacon church of Santiago in Villena (and probably under its influence), the main chapel of the Orihuela Cathedral (Alicante) and the temple of Our Lady of the Assumption in Utiel (Valencia), it represents one of the clearest and best examples of the mediterranean gothic along the territories of the former Marquisate of Villena, due to its variety of constructive solutions in the difficult art of the carving stone, and also for the fantastic use of the helical nerves in its columns and vaults by combining the fasciculated supports with torsos profiles, both in sharp edge and in convex moldings. Some of the most outstanding professionals in the field of design and stone carving were involved in its construction, as Jerónimo Quijano o Juan de Aranguren. The Saint Martin of La Gineta church is, without the slightest doubt, as a real gothic “jewel” in the Mancha. This study aims to provide a better understanding of the architectural values of this small church, as in our opinion it has been very little recognized in the historiography of the spanish architecture.
