The authors have investigated the effectiveness of potassium permanganate in the purification of the acid wastewater poured from Aznalc6llar quarry (Sevilla, Spain) and retained in Entremuros del Guadiamar, closed to Doñana National Park. Potassium permanganate reduced manganese and zinc concentrations in the water to residual values, and eliminated more than 70% of organic matter content (measured as Total Organic Carbon). Laboratory data indicated that the use of KMn04, in amounts generally under the stoichiometric demand, may be feasible to remove heavy metals and organic pollutants from contaminated waters.
