Drift is the major pollution source from the application of plant protection products on fruit trees. Low drift nozzles (LDN) are an effective technology for drift reduction. However, use of LDN may affect the efficacy of plant protection products for controlling targeted pests. The aim of this work was to assess the effect of LDN on drift and on the efficacy of pesticide treatments for the control of Aonidiella aurantii in citrus respect to standard nozzles (STN). To evaluate drift a trial following ISO 22866 (2005) standard was performed on a commercial Clemenules orchard. To evaluate the efficacy a season-long trial was conducted on a commercial Clemenules orchard and the following products were sprayed: Reldan (R) E + Atominal (R) 10 EC, Reldan (R) E y mineral oil against the first, second and third generation respectively. In both cases, all the applications were made at a volume rate of around 2500 L ha(-1), using an axial fan air-blast sprayer. One treatment with disc and core Teejet STN, and another with Albuz LDN TVI model were performed, selecting in each trial the suitable diameter to adjust the volume rate to the orchard. In the efficacy trial a Control treatment of no insecticide application against A. aurantii was also performed. Results showed that LDN reduced sedimenting spray drift in a 22.7%. No statistical differences in efficacy between STN and LDN were found. However, differences between them and the Control treatment were found. Therefore, the conclusion of this work is that the LDN are the solution to reduce drift against A. auranti in citrus without affecting the efficacy.
