    Partiendo de una mirada retrospectiva del período colonial, el artículo ofrece una visión general sobre el sistema de abastecimiento de agua en la ciudad de Quito, a fines del siglo XIX e inicios del XX. Con este propósito, se estudian las políticas municipales de higienización y salud pública y cómo incidieron en los hábitos domésticos de los habitantes. Además, se aborda el crecimiento ur-bano en relación a la provisión de agua potable y al crecimiento poblacional.

    Beginning with a retrospective of the colonial period, this article offers an over-view of the water supply system in the city of Quito in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The author outlines the policies of municipal sanitation and public health and their impact on the domestic habits of the city’s residents. In addition, the article addresses urban growth in relation to the provision of po-table water and population growth.
