The 20th century was a disquieting time that attracted novelists who were interestedin inner fears and how they showed in outer life; novelists astounded while they beheld societies onthe brink of collapse and disintegration, novelists who wished to support the individual who facedinjustice; novelists who felt curious about the inmoderate antagonism that motivated private duelsand confrontations among nations. The disquieting 20th century is examined in a selection of novelsby both British and North American writers. All of these literary works can be viewed as disquietingreading; they are truly attractive due to the palpìtating life of the protagonists and the intensity oftheir conflicts. Yet, they are markedly disquieting due to the pessimism they exude, which flowsopenly in words and actions, a pessimistic mood that the reader perceives despite the novelist’s senseof humour or despite their gentle heart.
