    Un término fundamental en la bioética es el de bios (βίος), que literalmente significada vida, pero no la vida común para todos los seres vivos, la biológica, sino la vida propia de los seres racionales, entre los cuales están Dios y los seres humanos. Aristóteles vincula este bios con el término de felicidad (εὐδαιμονία), pues ella puede corresponder a tres estilos de vida, el hedónico, el político o el contemplativo. La principal discusión de los estudiosos es si la felicidad es exclusiva de uno de esos estilos de vida, donde sobresale el contemplativo, o si es la amalgama de todas esas formas de vivir. Aunado a esto, surge la cuestión de que independiente del tipo de vida necesario para ser feliz, el ser humano es un ser sumido en el tiempo e inmerso en el vaivén del destino, de ahí que una vida feliz está siempre en la zozobra de que puede dejar de serla al darse un cambio drástico de las circunstancias de vida. Cualquier punto de inflexión en la vida del ser humano basta para cambiar el rumbo de su existencia.
