Resumen de Amor, engaño y pasado: The Nice and the Good

  La novela The Nice and the Good (1968) de Iris Murdoch desarrolla la trama de un grupo de amigos y colegas de oficina en Londres y en Dorset. A partir de un suicido, que sucede al comienzo de la novela, se van desarrollando una serie de acontecimientos que interrelacionan los diversos personajes, que muestran aspectos de su conducta y de su carácter moral. El presente estudio, más que un análisis específico de los personajes o de la trama, pretende exponer algunos de los aspectos temáticos más relevantes de la novela. Así, se analiza el tema del tiempo (relacionado con el olvido y perdón), las diversas tipologías de amor, la mentira (y el engaño) y otros elementos simbólicos de la novela: el mar y los animales. Con este objetivo, se establecen cinco apartados en los que se profundiza en cada uno de estos aspectos, poniéndolos en relación con la teoría filosófica de Iris Murdoch.

  Iris Murdoch’s The Nice and the Good (1968) is about a group of friends and office colleagues in London and Dorset. From an initial suicide, a great number of events interrelates the characters, showing their behaviour and personality. The aim of this work, far from analysing the characters or the plot, is to explain some of the main topics of the novel. Therefore, the subject of time (related to forgetfulness and forgiveness), the different types of love, the lie and the deceit, and other symbolic elements of the novel: the sea, the animals, etc. are presented. Thus, there are five sections that examine deeply on each of these aspects, linking them with Murdoch’s philosophic theory.
