Ser justo con Foucault: de la genealogía de la modernidad a la geohistoria del Antropoceno

    Para ser justo con Foucault, hay que intentar comprender el sentido de su obra y no hacerle decir algo diferente de lo que dijo, sea para convertirlo en un “hombre de paja” fácilmente refutable o para ensalzarlo como una fuente de autoridad inapelable con la que avalar nuestras propias ideas, por muy ajenas que sean a las suyas. Al mismo tiempo, si no queremos caer en el mero “comentario”, tenemos que mantener un diálogo crítico con su obra, explicitando nuestros acuerdos y desacuerdos, utilizando lo que nos parezca valioso, desarrollando lo que nos parezca insuficientemente elaborado y cuestionando lo que nos parezca equivocado. Ese difícil equilibrio ético e intelectual es el que he tratado de mantener con la obra de Foucault durante las cuatro décadas de mi trayectoria intelectual. En este artículo daré cuenta de ese diálogo crítico, siguiendo un recorrido a un tiempo cronológico y temático. Señalaré las aportaciones más importantes de la obra de Foucault y cómo me he servido de ellas en mi propio trabajo de investigación sociohistórica y de reflexión ético-política, pero también las limitaciones más relevantes de su “caja de herramientas” y cómo he tratado de problematizarlas.

    To be fair to Foucault, we must try to understand the meaning of his work and not to pretend that he said something different from what he said, either to turn him into an easily refutable "straw man" or to extol him as a source of unappealable authority with which to endorse our own ideas, however alien they may be to his. At the same time, if we do not want to fall into mere "commentary", we have to maintain a critical dialogue with his work, making explicit our agreements and disagreements, using what we find valuable, developing what we find insufficiently elaborated and questioning what we find wrong. This difficult ethical and intellectual balance is the one I have tried to maintain with Foucault's work during the four decades of my intellectual career. In this article I will give an account of this critical dialogue, following a chronological and thematic path. I will point out the most important contributions of Foucault's work and how I have used them in my own work of socio-historical research and ethical-political reflection, but also the most relevant limitations of his "toolbox" and how I have tried to problematize them.
