Este artigo procura traçar os percursos e as vicissitudes dos sete homens que entre 1837 e 1910 foram príncipes herdeiros da Coroa de Portugal. Apenas dois se enquadram no perfil habitual do herdeiro que chega à idade adulta aguardando a passagem do testemunho e desses somente um se casou e gerou filhos na condição de herdeiro. Todos receberam uma educação modelar e nenhum deles terá tido apetência pelo poder, como tantas vezes aconteceu na história das monarquias europeias, levando mesmo a conflitos entre pais e filhos.

This paper aims to understand the paths and vicissitudes of the seven men who were crown princes of Portugal between 1837 and 1910. Only two fit the usual profile of the heir who reaches adulthood awaiting the crown and only one got married and had children as an heir. All received a model education and none of them had an appetite for power, as has happened so many times in the history of European monarchies, even leading to conflicts between parents and sons.
