    Este trabajo examina la percepción que los turistas tienen sobre el medio geográfico que acoge esta actividad económica en la zona costera del municipio de Bahía de Banderas, en el occidente de México. Para ello, se presentan algunos de los resultados más importantes derivados de una investigación realizada sobre las consecuencias ambientales del turismo en esta parte del país. Desde hace más de 30 años, distintas autoridades han promovido esta porción del litoral pacífico mexicano como un destino de playa que aún conserva lo original de sus paisajes naturales lo que, a lo largo del tiempo, ha atraído turistas de diferentes estratos socioeconómicos, provenientes de lugares diversos. Sin embargo, la creación de infraestructura para atender el crecimiento reciente del sector ha generado una alteración sobre el hábitat natural que acoge al turismo.

    This paper examines the tourists’ perception of the environment in which tourism is being developed in the coastal area of the Bahía de Banderas municipality, western Mexico. In this context, some major research findings, derived from a study on the environmental consequences of tourism in this part of the country, are presented. For over three decades, Mexican authorities have promoted Bahía de Banderas as a coastal scenario which still retains its original natural features; this favourable situation has attracted a large number of tourists throughout the years. However, the creation of infrastructure needed to meet the ever expanding demands of the tourism economy in the area has contributed significantly to the deterioration of the natural habitat, where tourism is expanding.
