  • Resumen
    • Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) is a rheumatic disease which causes widespread exacerbated musculoskeletal pain, disability related to pain and high levels of negative emotions, specially depression. The present work has two aims: to describe the psychological techniques used in a cognitive-behavioural treatment of a 50 years old women with FMS who also suffered from a severe recidivating, partially remitting depressive disorder (APA, 2001), and to prove its effectiveness for the management of the psychological disorder and the main FMS symptoms (pain and disability). The tools used to carry out the patient's assessment were a semi-structured interview and the following self-report instruments: Three-dimensional questionnaire for depression -CTD-; Inventory of short-time/brief anxiety situations and responses -ISRA.B-; Health assessment questionnaire -HAQ- for disability assessment; and Pain frequency and intensity -FID-. The outcome of the cognitive-behavioral treatment shows a remarkable improvement regarding both, the patient's depressive disorder and the rheumatic disease (specifically pain and disability). These results pointed out the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioural techniques to obtain a better management of chronic pain illness, specially FMS.
