The Relationship between Doctors and Patients in Giovanni Verga’s Novellas. Some Examples · In the corpus of Giovanni Verga’s novellas (as in the pages of his friend Capuana) a doctor is often present, although his figure is often only quickly portrayed. The need to measure with the weakness of body and mind in fact puts Verga’s characters in contact with a physician, to whom they ask if not recovery, at least relief and help. The article aims to analyse some of the forms with which Verga, in his novellas, illustrates the doctorpatient relationship.

Nel corpus novellistico di Giovanni Verga (come del resto nelle pagine dell’amico Capuana) quella del medico è una presenza frequente, sebbene spesso tratteggiata con rapidi cenni. La necessità di misurarsi con la debolezza del corpo e della psiche pone infatti i personaggi verghiani inevitabilmente a contatto con lo specialista da cui ci si attende, se non la guarigione, quantomeno sollievo e aiuto. Il contributo si propone dunque di indagare alcune delle forme con cui Verga, nelle novelle, illustra il rapporto medico-malato
