    Los objetivos son la reinterpretación del continuum variación‐cambio y la situación especial del español entre las lenguas neolatinas. Se propone un proceso socio‐evolutivo entre la milenaria "divinización" del lenguaje y la "estandarización", un producto de la Modernidad, ambas fases con motivaciones y manifestaciones diferentes. La gradación variacióncambio actual se deriva, en buena medida, de la coexistencia de una presunta superioridad univarietal — desarrollada entre las fases evolutivas propuestas— y la interacción sociocomunal. La reinterpretación de esta situación evolutiva enfatiza el concepto clave del continuum y su polaridad, añadiendo otras dimensiones, entre las cuales se destaca la indetenible gradiencia dialectal. Se propone, por primera vez, una modificación del restrictivo concepto de distribución complementaria de un nivel —básico en el ciclo de vida del fonema tradicional— al añadir un segundo nivel. Esto es posible a la luz de la unión de la fonología cognitiva y el uso interaccional sociocomunal, que da otra dimensión explicativa al concepto del fonema, considerado entidad imperecedera. Se analiza la alta inteligibilidad interdialectal hispánica —notable entre lenguas neolatinas— para la cual se plantea una explicación basada en su excepcional vocalismo.

    This article aims at (i) a reinterpretation of the continuum variation‐change and its parameters and (ii) a review of the Spanish language as a special case in the Romance universe. The first objective posits a socio‐evolutive process between the ancient divinisation of language and standardisation, a product of Modernity, both phases with different motivations and manifestations. The actual variationchange gradation derives, in good measure, from the coexistence of alleged uni‐varietal superiority — developed between both phases— and sociocommunal interaction. Consequently, the reinterpretation of this evolutional situation emphasises the continuum concept and its polarity, as well as other dimensions, among which the active presence of dialectal gradience is stressed. The implicit restriction in uni‐level complementary distribution— basic element of the traditional phoneme concept— is modified for the first time with the addition of a second level. This is done in the light of the union of cognitive phonology and language usage, thus providing a new explanatory dimension to the concept of the phoneme, considered an unperishable entity. The issue of the Spanish interdialectal intelligibility — highly significant among Romance languages— is analysed, providing an explanation based on its exceptional vocalism.
