    • Open Churches and Closed Terreiros. Religious Responses to Covid-19 Pandemic in Brazil · Many people have turned to religions in search for comfort, support, hope and meaning during the Covid-19 pandemic, as it is typically the case in times of crisis. Simultaneously, as measures such as lockdown, quarantine, isolation and physical distance have been implemented in order to contain the spread of the pandemic, religious institutions took different positions, in agreement or contrast with government bodies, and had to reduce and adapt their activities. In Brazil, we can see opposite attitudes taken by Neo-Pentecostal Churches and African-derived religions about the decision to continue or suspend public rites: the former opposed the temple closure and negotiated with the government so that religious service might be considered an essential activity and continue even during the lockdown, whereas the latter anticipated government steps with the nearly unanimous decision to prevent crowding and suspend collective celebrations. These decisions are based on the intricate interplay of economic, social and political factors, as well as the meaning of the pandemic, disease and evil in their cosmology. In this paper, I present a comparative analysis of the meaning of the Covid-19 pandemic for Neo-Pentecostal Churches and African-derived religions in Brazil, focusing on the contrast between divine will and human responsibility, separation and union, war language and love ethics
