Resumen de Dietro il conflitto Russia - Ucraìna: La guerra santa di Kirill e Putin

Massimo Rubboli

  • Behind the Russian-Ukrainian Conflict: the Holy War of Kirill and Putin · The war of Russia against Ukraine also conceals a religious dimension, connected to the prevailing religious tradition of both countries, namely Orthodox Christianity. In the last two decades, the Russian Orthodox Church has secured an increasingly tight alliance with the political power, in a sort of a new Byzantine dyarchy between emperor and patriarch. The Church has supported Russian expansions’ ambitions, in exchange for the recognition of a privileged status and of opportunities such as the teaching of Orthodox religion in public schools. This alliance explains the Patriarch Kirill’s support and legitimation of the Russian invasion, strongly criticized by the Orthodox Churches in Ukraine and by a dissident part of the Russian Orthodox Church.
