Sewage sludge from water purification facilities is difficult to handle. The mechanical dehydration for sewage sludge is limited normally to about 35% of dry matter, higher values over 40% can only be achieved by drying. For mineral sludges, these values are different. A solar sludge dryer, developed in Germany, has been successfully operating there since 1994. The annual drying capacity varies according to meteorological conditions, in southern Germany about 700 kg/m3 water can be evaporated annually. The solar drying requires space, less investment cost and only 3-5% auxiliary energy of industrial drying processes. The solar drying process may be used to dry any wet bulky material.
