Santo Ildefonso, Portugal
The notarial documentation, so often devalued by its repetitive and seemingly uninformative content, is a valuable source of information when subjected to thorough analysis. From a set of documents with notarial instruments, coming from the Colegiada de Santa Maria de Guimarães, we intend to study the notaries who exercised their craft in this town, in the middle of the fifteenth century. The study of this documentation made it possible to obtain data not only about the place of writing, but also about the careers, documentary production, residence, title and signs of notaries. The crossing of these elements allowed us to know the writing professionals who rendered their service to this religious institution. In addition, it was possible to make considerations about the “paço dos tabeliães”, among other writing spaces, comparing the reality provided by the legislation with that transmitted by the documentation. We also seek to reflect on the notary sign, as a potential study element still insufficiently explored by historiography.
