It is becoming more and more accepted that no one single waste management method can deal with all materials in municipal solid waste in both an environmentally and economically sustainable way Effective management of waste needs to combine a range of treatment options including elements such as material recycling, biological treatment, thermal treatment and landfilling, within an overall integrated waste management (IWM) system. In such a system, composting of hormesorted waste may become increasingly attractive for municipalities looking to increase their diversion rate whilst also considering the affordability of waste management. This article provides an example of an integrated waste management system that includes composting of home-sorted waste and achieves a 50 % landfill diversion rate.
