Las minas y la fábrica de alumbre de Rodalquilar estuvieron activas durante el siglo XVI y fueron uno de los principales centros productores de alumbre en Europa, compitiendo directamente con el centro productor de Tolfa (Italia) con-trolado por el papado de Roma y con el de Mazarrón (España) controlado por el Marques de Villena y el Marques de Los Vélez. Aunque Rodalquilar nunca llegó a alcanzar la relevancia de Tolfa o de Mazarrón, existen pruebas de dife-rentes planes que se urdieron desde Mazarrón y Tolfa para controlar o anular la producción de alumbre en Rodalquilar, ya que parecía ser una amenaza para su oligopolio. Posiblemente los yacimientos minerales y las actividades desa-rrolladas sobre el terreno en Rodalquilar hacían sombra a Tolfa y a Mazarrón, los dos grandes fabricantes de alumbre en la Europa del siglo XVI

The Rodalquilar mines and alum factory were active during the 16th century and were one of the main alum manu-facturing centers in Europe, competing directly with the Tolfa (Italy) manufacturing center controlled by the papacy of Rome and with that of Mazarrón (Spain) controlled by the Marquis of Villena and the Marquis of Los Vélez. Although Rodalquilar never reached the relevance of Tolfa or Mazarrón, there are evidences about the multiple intrigues hat-ched from Mazarrón and Tolfa to control or remove the production of alum of Rodalquilar, because it was a risk to their oligopoly. It seems that the mineral deposits and the activities carried out on site in Rodalquilar were a threat to Tolfa and Mazarrón, the two great manufacturers of alum in Europe during the 16th century
