Resumen de Pleasure before Duty: Playing and Studying in the Cultic Context of Kharayeb

Parmi les figurines en terre cuite découvertes dans le lieu de culte de Kharayeb (VIIe-Ier siècles av. J.-C.), situées dans l’arrière-pays de Tyr (Liban), un pourcentage très élevé date de la période hellénistique et représente des images d’enfants, d’adolescents et de femmes. À la lumière de ces données, certains spécialistes ont supposé qu’une divinité associée à l’enfance et à la maternité était vénérée dans ce sanctuaire. Quelle que soit la divinité, l’énorme quantité et la variété des iconographies d’enfants jouant avec des animaux (oiseaux et chiens), des balles et d’autres objets sont très surprenantes. Parmi les figurines en terres cuites se trouvent aussi des élèves avec des tablettes. On examinera toutes les données relatives aux figurines des enfants liées aux activités de jeu et à l’éducation afin d’obtenir de nouvelles informations sur la vie quotidienne du sanctuaire et sur les caractéristiques de la Phénicie hellénistique.

Among the terracotta figurines discovered in the cult place of Kharayeb (7th-1st centuries BCE), located in the hinterland of Tyre (Lebanon), a very high percentage dates back to the Hellenistic period and presents images of children, adolescents and women. Considering these data, some scholars have supposed that a god linked to childhood and motherhood was worshipped in this sanctuary. Whoever the deity was, the huge amount and the variety of iconographies of children playing with animals (birds and dogs), balls and other objects are really surprising. Among the terracottas, there are also figurines portraying schoolchildren with writing tablets. The paper examines in depth all the data related to the figurines representing children and linked to playing activities and education in order to shed a new light on the daily life at the sanctuary and more broadly on the characteristics of Hellenistic Phoenicia.
