El Misterio de Elche fue declarado Obra Maestra del Patrimonio Oral e Inmaterial de la Humanidad en el año 2001. Esta declaración tiene su precedente en la de Monumento Nacional de España, que llevó a cabo el Gobierno Español en el año 1931, siendo el primer bien cultural inmaterial de la nación. Ambas declaraciones protegen la Festa d’Elx: la representación de la muerte y Asunción de la Virgen, el modo en el que el pueblo de Elche viene celebrando la fiesta de su Patrona desde hace al menos cinco siglos. A lo largo del tiempo en la representación del Misteri se reflejan las vicisitudes de la vida ciudadana, en los momentos más esplendorosos como aquellos más tristes. El arraigo de la Festa en la población, el sentirlo y celebrarlo como el rito comunitario por excelencia, hizo que siempre se buscase el modo de defenderlo y protegerlo ante las adversidades. Lecciones del pasado que nos deben servir en nuestro tiempo.

The Mystery of Elche was declared Masterpiece of the Oral and intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2001. This proclamation finds its precedent in 1931, with its declaration as National Monument by the Spanish Government, thus becoming the first intangible cultural asset of the nation. These two declarations have been protecting La Festa d’Elx, as The Mystery is locally known, comprised of the representation of the death and the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. This festivity of the patron saint of Elche has been celebrated since, at least, five centuries ago. Throughout the years, the representation of The Mystery has conveyed the ups and downs of the city life: its most splendid times, but also the saddest ones. In the past, La Festa had been so embedded in its citizenship, who felt and celebrated it as the quintessential community ceremony, that it naturally became the main way to defend and protect citizens in the face of adversity. A lesson of the past which should also guide our present.
