Les notes de Manuel Milà i Fontanals sobre el parlar de Maó al segle XIX

    L’objectiu d’aquest article és donar a conèixer el contingut i les característi-ques més destacables dels papers en què Manuel Milà i Fontanals va recollir informació sobre el maonès parlat a la segona meitat del segle XIX. Aquestes notes, que es conserven a la Biblioteca Menéndez y Pelayo de Santander, for-men part d’un conjunt més ampli de papers personals sobre els dialectes cata-lans que Milà havia anat recollint entre 1870 i 1880 per bastir una descripció completa del català parlat, un projecte que malauradament no acomplí. Hem classificat la informació recollida per Milà en dos capítols, dedicats respec-tivament a la fonètica i a la morfologia del maonès, als quals precedeix una breu exposició de les característiques d’aquesta documentació. Així mateix, hem decidit presentar la informació lingüística de les notes esmentades a partir d’esquemes interpretatius, a fi de facilitar-ne la consulta. Malgrat la brevetat i simplicitat de les notes de Milà, cal destacar que aquesta recopilació consti-tueix una interessant aproximació al maonès parlat fa poc més de cent trenta anys, per la qual cosa és una aportació de gran valor per al coneixement de la diacronia i la variació geogràfica del català de Menorca.

    The goal of this article is to introduce the contents and the most outstanding characteristics of the notes about the Mahon dialect collected by Manuel Milà i Fontanals during the second half of the 19th century. These documents that are preserved in the Library Menéndez y Pelayo of Santander are part of a more extensive set of personal notes about the Catalan dialects which were collected by Milà between 1870 and 1880 in order to build a complete description of the spoken Catalan, but his project unfortunately could not be accomplished. The contents of his notes have been classified into two chapters, one devoted to the phonetics and the other to the morphology of Mahon dialect. Both chapters are preceded with a brief exposition of the characteristics of Milà’s scripts. Moreover, we have decided to present the linguistic information of the notes mentioned above by means of interpretative outlines, in order to facilitate their comprehension. In spite of the shortness and simplicity of Milà’s notes, it is necessary to underline that this compilation constitutes an interesting appro-ach to the Mahonese that was spoken one hundred and thirty years ago. For this reason, we believe that Milà’s documents are a valuable contribution to the knowledge of the historical changes and the geographical variation of the Catalan language spoken in Minorca.
