    El artículo explora el papel de los archivos en el Imperio de los Austrias, durante la edad protomoderna, en ambos lados del Atlántico. Con ese propósito se anali-zan las diferentes tareas que incumbían a los archivos en el siglo XVI y XVII. Se examinan el archivo de la ciudad de Cuenca (actual Ecuador) en el ámbito muni-cipal, el de la Audiencia de Quito en el ámbito regional, el archivo de Simancas (Castilla) en el nivel real y, por último, el archivo en la embajada española en Roma. También se ofrecen reflexiones sobre el carácter y las particularidades de los repositorios documentales, prestando especial atención a la escritura como medio de gobierno.

    The aim of the article is to observe the role of archives on both sides of the Atlantic in the Spanish Habsburg Empire during the early modern times. For this reason the different tasks incumbent on archives during the sixteenth and seventeenth century are analyzed. The archive of the city of Cuenca is investigated at the muni-cipal level as well as that located in the audience of Quito on the regional level to the point of the royal archive in Simancas (Castile) and the archive at the Spanish Embassy in Rome. The text also offers insights into the nature and characteristics of archives with particular attention to writtenness as an instrument of government.
