Resumen
The essay considers the stylistic features of Torquato Tasso’s love sonnets, focusing on the formal revision implemented by the author since the 1580s. The faithful imitation of Giovanni Della Casa’s poetry, which characterized the early lyrics, is progressively replaced by a more measured use of gravitas. The harshness of the sounds, the use of a complex and irregular syntax and the presence of intense enjambements are traits that are largely recognizable in the sonnets published in the anthology of the Academici Eterei (Padua, 1567); however, they are not fully eliminated in the last edition of the love poems. A series of examples from the Mantuan Osanna edition (1591) demonstrates how the formal artifices of the elevated and sublime style aremostly preserved where gravitas also concerns the contents, according with an idea of poetry that is closer to Tasso’s theoretical writings.
