El trabajo busca observar, a través de la fotografía, la forma en que la sociedad chilena ve a los mapuche-williche. Según esta investigación, los mapuche-williche lograron adaptarse a la nueva realidad de ser un pueblo colonizado utilizando ingeniosamente las formas en que era visto por la sociedad chilena. La metodología aplicada para observar las fuentes y para comprender este fenómeno de visualidad fue una adaptación de la “dialéctica de la mirada” de Walter Benjamin, analizada e interpretada por Buck-Morss. Para este trabajo, el centro dialéctico no estará en el concepto de “Mercancía”, sino que se enfocará en el concepto de “Otredad”, lo que permitirá un mejor análisis del cómo se mira cada una de estas sociedades cuando una de estas busca convertirse en dominadora y la otra, en un proceso de subalternización, aprende a utilizar los códigos de la otra para mantenerse y resistir, estableciendo relaciones de poder que le sean más favorable. Las fuentes para esta investigación fueron fotografías y fotografías de estudio, periódicos regionales de la época y memoriales y cartas construidos por los mapuche-williche.

The work seeks to observe, through photography, the way in which Chilean society sees the Mapuche-Williche. According to this research, the Mapuche-Williche managed to adapt to the new reality of being a colonized people by cleverly using the ways they were seen by Chilean society. The methodology applied to observe the sources and to understand this phenomenon of visuality was an adaptation of Walter Benjamin's "Dialectics of Seeing", analysed, and interpreted by Buck-Morss. For this work, the dialectical centre will not be on the concept of "Commodity", but will focus on the concept of "Otherness", which will allow a better analysis of how each of these societies is viewed when one of them seeks to become dominant and the other, in a process of subalternisation, learns to use the codes of the other to maintain and resist, establishing power relations that are more favourable to it. The sources for this research were photographs and studio photographs, regional newspapers of the time, and memorials and letters constructed by the Mapuche-Williche.
