Resumen de El territorio nacional en el imaginario de la España del siglo XIX

La construcción de los estados nacionales es un proceso inseparable de la construcción de los territorios nacionales, porque tanto el Estado como la nación en la que el primero se justifica son conceptos espacialmente anclados. El territorio es una parte de la superficie terrestre delimitada políticamente. Tiene como tal rasgos y elementos geográficos propios y es objeto de representaciones sociales diversas, materialidad e imágenes que interactúan en su transformación. En este texto tratamos de rastrear las formas en que la construcción del territorio contribuyó a configurar la idea de España en el siglo XIX. Nos acercamos a esa construcción por medio del análisis de la evolución de las fronteras, de la acumulación de conocimientos sobre la geografía nacional y de los usos del nuevo concepto de paisaje. Estas tres puertas de entrada al territorio nacional se abordan, tratando de evaluar cómo la información reunida por expertos e instituciones, las prácticas sociales y los nuevos discursos, conceptos e imágenes difundidos entre ciertos sectores de la población contribuyeron a dotar de contenido al imaginario de España.

State-building, in the case of Nation-States, is a process that cannot be separated from the construction of the national territory, because both the State and the nation, which politically justifies the former, are spatially anchored. Territory is a part of the earth surface, which is politically defined. It has as such geographic features and elements and is the object of diverse social representations, and both things interact in its transformations. This text aims at tracing the way in which the construction of the territory shaped the idea the imaginary of Spain in the nineteenth century. It does so through the analysis of the evolution of the borders of the national territory, the accumulation of geographic knowledge on it, and the uses of the new concept of landscape. These three gates of access to the territory are dealt with, in an attempt to evaluate how the information gathered by experts and institutions, the social practices and the new discourses, images and concepts that spread among some sectors of the population, contributed to give content to the imaginary of Spain.
