  • This paper analyses the relations between the cities of Tuscany and Pope Gregory XI, in relation to Florence’s desire to push Lucca and Pisa to join the anti-papal league formed with Milan in the summer of 1375. In this relationship between Florence and the two cities of north-western Tuscany, Saint Catherine of Siena’s role is highlighted. At the same time, new questions are raised for future research: what was the attitude of the Tuscan clergy? And what was the attitude of the papal rectors in central Italy?.
