El discurso sobre el matrimonio y las mujeres en el catolicismo español (1900-1936)

    Los intelectuales católicos españoles, eclesiásticos y seglares, durante el primer tercio del siglo XX trataron de normativizar todo lo relacionado con las mujeres y el matrimonio. Para definir el ideal de matrimonio, y la posición de las españolas dentro de este sacramento, tomaron como marco de referencia los argumentos de la encíclica Arcanum divinae Sapientiae del Papa León XIII (1880). Del documento pontificio, sobre todo, recogieron dos nociones: por un lado, la de que fue Cristo el liberador de las mujeres al otorgar al matrimonio un carácter sacramental e indisoluble y, por otro lado, la de que, si bien el hombre debía ser el cabeza de familia y la esposa obedecerle, el matrimonio tenía que estar basado en el sentimiento y el mutuo amor y no en el interés.

    In the first decades of the 20th century, Spanish Catholic intellectuals, both ecclesiastical and secular, strove to define everything related to women and marriage, especially the position of Spanish women within this sacrament. To do that, they took the encyclical Arcanum divinae Sapientiae, written by Pope Leo XIII (1880), as the axis of their reasoning. Above all, they used two ideas of the encyclical: on the one hand, that Christ was the liberator of women, which he did it by giving the marriage an indissoluble character and, on the other hand, that, although man should be the head of the family and the wife must obey him, the marriage should be based on mutual love and not on any kind of interest.
