    Un amplio corpus exegético centrado en el Purgatorio, con incidencia en la construcción de la iconografía europea y americana, se enlaza con la meditación en torno al Ars moriendi y el éschatos. Aunque las representaciones de las ánimas del Purgatorio son mucho más frecuentes en el campo del grabado y la pintura, el templo del pueblo de la Santísima Trinidad, sobre el Paraná, alberga un importante altar dedicado a esta iconografía, que originalmente conjugó relieves en piedra e imágenes en cedro. El presente artículo examina el lazo que une la tratadística, las representaciones de ánimas del Purgatorio, sus elementos iconográficos e interpretación. Asimismo, se analiza la incidencia de las traducciones de los padres Barzana y Ruiz de Montoya, equivalencias idiomáticas que llevarían a implicar la doctrina impartida con las creencias guaraníes acerca de las almas.

    A large exegetical corpus centered on Purgatory, with an impact on the construction of European and American iconography, is linked to the meditation on the Ars moriendi and the eschatos. Although representations of the souls in Purgatory are much more frequent in the field of engraving and painting, the church in the mission of Santísima Trinidad, on the Paraná, houses an important altar dedicated to this iconography, which originally combined stone reliefs and cedar images. This article examines the link between the treatise, the representations of souls in Purgatory, their iconographic elements and their interpretation. It also analyses the incidence of the translations by Fathers Barzana and Ruiz de Montoya, idiomatic equivalences that would lead to the implication of the doctrine imparted with Guaraní beliefs about souls.
