Resumen de Más allá de la función y la estética: Los casos de Alfredo Jaar y Francis Alÿs

  La arquitectura responde necesariamente a una función, y es ahí donde se encuentra la principal diferencia respecto al resto de las artes. Lo que la tradición moderna instala es la integración de las artes, y es desde la segunda mitad del siglo XX que surgen una serie de arquitectos(as) que se desplazan a estas. Planteamos que existe una serie de arquitectos(as)-artistas que además de ampliar el campo de la profesión, realizan lo que denominamos arquitectura-expandida, que es la creación de obras artísticas con un marcado sustento teórico en la formación de arquitecto(a) del artista, logrando obras de carácter arquitectónico pero alejadas de la arquitectura como la conocemos ya que carecen de función, cuestión primordial para esta. Revisamos los casos de Alfredo Jaar y Francis Alÿs, y concluimos que estos artistas, quienes comparten el hecho de ser arquitectos, realizan cada uno a su manera, arquitectura-expandida en la periferia de la profesión.

  Architecture necessarily responds to a function, and that is where the main difference with respect to the rest of the arts is. What the modern tradition installs is the integration of the arts, and it is from the second half of the 20th century that a series of architects moved to arts. We propose that there is a series of architect-artists who, in addition to expanding the field of the profession, work on the periphery of it, locating themselves in the intermediate place, carry out what we call expanded-architecture, which is the creation of artistic works with a marked theoretical basis in the training of the architect, achieving works of an architectural nature but far from architecture as we know it, since they lack the function, primary issue for it. We review the cases of Alfredo Jaar and Francis Alÿs, and conclude that these artists, who share the fact of being architects, each carry out, in their own way, expanded-architecture on the periphery of the profession.
