  • Intramuscular fat (IMF), cholesterol (Chol) and fatty acid (FA) contents have important consequences on meat quality as well as on its nutritional properties. In this study we performed a genome-wide association analysis (GWAS) in a Duroc outbred population (N = 350) for IMF, Chol, palmitic, stearic, oleic (C18:1n9) and linoleic (C18:2n6c) percentages in the gluteus medius (GM) and longissimus dorsi (LD) muscles. Genotypes for 60,000 SNP were obtained with the Illumina Infinium HD Porcine SNP60 Beadchip. Association analyses were carried out with PLINK v1.07, and permutation tests were used to correct for multiple testing. A total of 24 SNPs were significantly associated with GM IMF on chromosomes SSC2, SSC3, SSC4, SSC8, SSC10 and SSC14. With regard to GM FA content phenotypes, associations were observed for palmitic (SSC5) and stearic (SSC1,2,4,5,12,14,17 and 18). Regarding the LD muscle, we found associations with stearic content (SSC3,4,6,7,13 and 14). It is worth to highlight that SSC14 contains most of the associations with muscle lipid traits and that, in general, there is limited concordance between results obtained in the GM and LD GWAS analyses.
