Este ensayo estudia la realización y el empleo de los fuegos artificiales en las festividades religiosas celebradas en Lima durante los siglos XVII y XVIII. Ellos estuvieron presentes en numerosas celebraciones del calendario litúrgico y también en otras ocasiones excepcionales. Los espectáculos pirotécnicos tuvieron un enorme poder de convocatoria debido al empleo de la música, la danza y los elementos dramáticos que obtenían al conferir movimiento a las figuras y representaciones. Constituían una expresión de poder económico, pero, sobre todo, del gusto de la sociedad colonial por contar en las fiestas con entretenimientos inusitados e ingeniosos, que causaran pasmo y admiración. Estos espectáculos constituyeron una de las expresiones más interesantes de la cultura barroca en el Imperio español.

This essay discusses the production and use of fireworks in Lima’s religious festivities during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. They were present in numerous celebrations on the liturgical calendar and other special occasions. Pyrotechnic displays attracted considerable public attention; and further interest was created by combining them with music and dance, as they added a dramatic element to performances. They were partly an expression of patrons’ wealth, but above all reflected how much colonial society delighted in extraordinary and ingenious forms of entertainment that produced admiration and awe. Firework displays were among the most interesting expressions of Baroque culture in the Spanish empire.
