Lungo il filo della scrittura memoriale iniziata nel 1923 (Mia madre), Scrivere non è necessario rappresenta una tappa che la critica considera una svolta nel per-corso intellettuale dello scrittore. Espressione evidente di una certa insoddisfazione di sé e del mondo circostante, questo disincanto dà il tono tra l’amaro e l’ironico alla singolare opera della maturità di Marino Moretti. «Diario, racconti, biografia, fantasticherie – come si legge in una scheda editoriale – questo vuol essere il libro di uno scrittore, notissimo e insieme ignotissimo, che oggi si confessa non certo timidamente: confessione di uno per tutti».
