    The social history of the early modern period has often struggled to take into account behavioral divergences, particularly socio-demographic, of individuals belonging to similar socio-economic groups. After reviewing the historical literature on this question, we will show that research in the other social sciences, in particular the sociology of education, has long emphasized the role of the family in the formation of specific individual behaviors that can constitute a «family culture» and whose salient features are transmitted over generations. We will test this hypothesis on a specific action, the choice by the parents of a godfather and a godmother for their children, and on a particular place which is the city of Charleville, in the north of the kingdom of France, during the 18th century. And we will show the existence of a preferential social choice that characterizes the families observed over about a century and constitutes a piece in the constitution of a «family culture».

    La historia social de los siglos XVI, XVII y XVIII se ha esforzado por tener en cuenta las divergencias de comportamiento, sobre todo sociodemográficas, mostradas por los individuos pertenecientes a grupos socioeconómicos similares. Después de revisar la literatura histórica sobre esta cuestión, mostraremos cómo durante mucho tiempo la investigación de las otras ciencias sociales, en particular de la sociología de la educación, ha enfatizado el papel que ha jugado la familia en la formación de aquellos comportamientos individuales específicos que pueden llegar a da vida a una «cultura familiar», cuyos principales rasgos, por otro lado, se transmiten de generación en generación. Pondremos a prueba esta hipótesis sobre una actuación histórica concreta: la elección por parte de los padres de un padrino y una madrina en la ciudad de Charleville —situada al norte del reino de Francia— a lo largo del siglo XVIII. Nos detendremos así en el análisis de una elección social preferencial realizada por las familias observadas durante casi un siglo, la cual constituye una pieza clave en la constitución de una «cultura familiar».
