This essay analyses the role of the 6th Countess of Fernán Núñez, doña María de la Esclavitud Sarmiento (1760-1810), wife of the Spanish ambassador in Lisbon and Paris, in the formation of the lineage's library. Historiography has highlighted the bibliophilia of don Carlos Gutiérrez de los Ríos, 6th Count of Fernán Núñez (1742-1795), but little or nothing is known about his wife's relationship with the culture of books. Through the study of inventories and correspondence, the aim of this work is to analyse the influence of gender in the formation, conservation and transmission of an enlightened library of more than 3,000 volumes.
