The present paper analyses from a gender perspective the Catholic mobilisation that took place during the five years of Spain’s Second Republic, in an effort to find some criteria that may throw light on the debate surrounding the alleged feminisation of religion in the nineteenth century and the opening third of the twentieth century. We plan to use an approach that distinguishes between the different levels witnessed to by the evidence of a plural reality, paying particular attention to the political sphere, more specifically to the actions in defence of Catholic interests, and to the so-called Obra pro culto y clero.
