    El presente artículo toma como objeto de estudio la muerte a partir de las iluminaciones contenidas en los libros de horas tardomedievales. Para ello, resultan especialmente valiosos los pasajes dedicados al oficio y vigilia de los difuntos Se debe tener en cuenta que el público receptor de estos productos era por norma laico, rico y poderoso, pero no siempre letrado. Bajo esta perspectiva, surge la pregunta de cómo podía prepararse un seglar para el momento de la muerte. Los libros de horas ofrecen un marco interpretativo en dos niveles: ofrecen la posibilidad de ser leídos en voz alta si el receptor es analfabeto y conceden una importancia elevada al arte figurativo, que ayuda a transmitir unas determinadas enseñanzas al ir acompañando al texto. Para elaborar el presente estudio, se ha elaborado un corpus de 220 manuscritos miniados procedentes de diferentes bibliotecas históricas para proceder a una clasificación temática de las iluminaciones que aparecen en la sección del Oficio de los Difuntos.

    This article tackles death as an object of study from the illuminations contained in the Late Medieval books of hours. In this respect, the passages dedicated to the office and vigil of the dead are especially valuable. It must be considered that the recipients of these products were for the most part lay, rich and powerful people, yet not always literate. From this perspective, the question arises as to how a lay person could prepare for the moment of death. The books of hours offer an interpretative framework on two levels: they offer the possibility of being read aloud if the recipient is illiterate and they attach great importance to figurative art, which helps to transmit certain teachings by accompanying the text. To prepare this study, a corpus of 220 illuminated manuscripts from different historical libraries has been created to proceed to a thematic classification of the illuminations that appear in the section of the Office of the Dead.
