Thermal Treatment of sewage sludge can be beneficial as a pre-treatment step of many treatment/disposal options, but above all, it allows the recovery of the energetic content sludge. Energy recovery from sewage sludge can be performed in many ways: direct incineration, thermal drying followed by incineration and co-combustion with municipal solid wastes or other non-conventional fuels. Another option is the recovery of waste energy (e.g., from an endothermal engine using biogas as fuel) to dry sludge which, in turn, can be used as a fuel. The paper will evaluate several options of thermal treatment of sewage sludge, with particular emphasis on the energetic yield from different processes.
