This paper aims to examine the discursive strategies in Cervantes’ and Gracián’s literature, mostly concerned to the configuration of the self and the status of the world in a metaphysical sense. Concepts such as «courage» or «heart» should be read in an ethical way as the essential approach to the human being and its world. These strategies show how we usually address the beginnings of the Modern Age (from its last development in the German Idealism) and how this historical connection should be reconsidered.
