The paper argues that the Proto-Germanic adjective *kwikwa- ‘alive’ is not related to PIE *gih3o-, as is usually assumed, but represents a reduplicated formation based on PIE *geh2- ‘take a step, walk’, i.e. *gi-gh2ó- ‘walking’ which was used metonymically in the meaning ‘alive’. A similar form may underly Vedic jágat- ‘world’, originally ‘all that moves’, if this is derived from *ge-gh2ét- of the type Skt. sravát- ‘stream’ (: srávati ‘flows’).
