Resumen de Αὐτός Meaning ‘Same’ and the Article: a Mycenaean Syntactic Pattern?

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyse the only Mycenaean example of along with the relevant Homeric examples in order to trace back its syntactic and semantic evolution from the second to the first millennium as well as its possible implications regarding the creation of the article in Greek. In the Mycenaean example expresses identity and is combined with a form of the stem *to/a- that contributed to the emergence of the article. This is somewhat surprising since Homeric Greek exhibits the use of to express identity both with and without that association, though the first possibility has been traditionally considered an innovation.
