Several wastewater treatment systems -mainly by stabilization ponds- are based on the symbiotic interaction between algae and bacteria. We describe some of these systems their characteristics and associated problems, as well as the possible uses of the biomass from the microalgae produced. Besides, the most important results of the work carried out in GAIKER as part of an EEC project on inorganic nutrient removal in potentially drinking waters using immobilized microalgae, a new emerging technology; are shown.
