    La historia interminable. Este ensayo desarrolla un análisis de la erudición constitucional italiana sobre el papel del Presidente de la República en nuestro sistema legal. Las teorías desarrolladas en este punto van desde la que lo describe como el gobernante supremo del Estado en momentos de crisis, hasta la que lo ve como el gerente de un poder de dirección política constitucional. La principal pregunta que se han planteado los investigadores desde la aprobación de la Constitución de 1948 es si el presidente es una estructura garante o de gobierno, pero la doctrina autoritaria más reciente ha descartado ambas tesis, acabando por definirlo como un «giroscopio constitucional». En definitiva, la definición del papel del Presidente de la República en el ordenamiento jurídico italiano es una verdadera historia interminable debido a la flexibilidad de las normas constitucionales que regulan sus atribuciones, que no permiten concluir con una tesis unívoca.

    This essay develops an analysis of the Italian constitutional scholarship on the role of the President of the Republic in our legal system. The theories developed on this point range from that which describes him as the supreme ruler of the State in moments of crisis, to that which sees him as the holder of a power of constitutional political direction. The main question that researchers have asked themselves since the approval of the Constitution of 1948 is whether the President is a guaranteeing or governing structure, but the most recent authoritative doctrine has ruled out both theses, ending up by defining him as a constitutional gyroscope. In short, the definition of the role of the President of the Republic in the Italian legal system is a real never-ending story because of the flexibility of the constitutional norms that regulate its attributions which do not allow to embrace a univocal thesis.
