This essay examines a series of examples in which the negative particle ne is used with the conditional-restrictive meaning of dum(modo) ne. Employed mainly as adverb in nominal (mostly comparative) phrases, it seems to be a typical feature of technical prose and therefore generally excluded from the language of high literature. Its productivity runs out during the Julio-Claudian age and survives almost exclusively in locutions as ne minus et sim. where the conditional-restrictive sense is no longer or barely perceptible
