The purpose of this paper is to analyse the non-additive adverbial uses of καί. These tend to be identified as “emphatic” in lexica and studies on parti-cles. Here it is argued that they are proper to a particle of emphatic assertion of identity according to the criteria established by Ekkehard König. In order to carry out the analysis, these uses of καί are compared with similar uses of other additive particles in modern languages. The Ancient Greek data have been drawn from a corpus made up of works by Homer, Herodotus, Sopho-cles, Plato, and Polybius
