This articles retraces the various phases leading up to Vittorio Sereni’s choice of title for his work, Strumenti umani. It examines previously unpublished materials from the author’s personal archive in Luino which bear witness to the different alternatives considered by the author. The aim is to better explain the deep significance of the title itself. In this light, particular attention is given to the connections between the title and an important work by the philosopher Enzo Paci, A cominciare dal presente, published in 1962 in the first issue of the periodical «Questo e altro» and never before considered in this context.
