  • In total, 4,000 one-d-old pullets were used to investigate the effects of the main cereal and the inclusion of a fiber source in the diet on growth performance of pullets from 1 to 35 d of age. There were 2 control diets based on corn or barley and 6 extra diets arranged as a 2x3 factorial that included 2 or 4% of cereal straw, sugar beet pulp (SBP), or sunflower hulls (SFH) at the expense (wt/wt) of the whole corn diet. Main cereal of the diet did not affect any of the variables studied. However, pullets fed SFH had higher BW gain (P < 0.05) than pullets fed SBP with pullets fed straw being intermediate. The inclusion of a fiber source in the diet increased ADFI linearly (L, P < 0.05) and tended to increase BW gain. SBP inclusion tended (L, P = 0.063) to hinder FCR but no effects were detected for straw or SFH inclusion. In conclusion, the inclusion of moderate amounts of lignified sources of fiber improved growth performance of pullets from 0 to 35 d of age. Also, barley supplemented with enzymes and corn can be used indistinctly as the main cereal in starter diets for pullets.
