  • The influence of the main cereal of the diet and feed form in the different phases of the rearing period on performance of egg-brown laying pullets from 1 to17 wk of age was studied. There were 8 dietary treatments arranged as a 2×4 factorial with 2 main cereals (corn vs. wheat) and 4 forms of the diets during the feeding program. The treatments consisted in changing the form of the feed (mash vs. crumble) in the different phases (1 to 5, 5 to 10, and 10 to 17 wk of age). In 2 of the treatments pullets were fed mash or crumble continuously (1-17 wk), whereas in the others 2 treatments they were fed crumbles from 1 to 5 or 1 to 10 wk followed by mash. All diets within each of the phases were formulated to have similar nutrient content. From 1 to 17 wk of age main cereal of the diet did not affect any of the variables studied. Feed form affected growth performance of the pullets at all periods. The pullets received mash or crumble for the entire experimental period had higher ADFI than pullets fed crumbles from 1 to 5 wk. Pullets fed crumbles continuously had higher BWG (14.0 vs. 13.4, 13.3, and 13.3; P < 0.001) than pullets fed mash. Also, pullets fed crumbles continuously had better FCR than pullets fed mash with the other pullets being intermediate. The data indicate that the main cereal of the diet did not affect pullet performance. Also, feeding crumbles improved growth performance of the pullets. Therefore, wheat supplemented with enzymes can be used in substitution of corn in pullets from 1 to 17 wk of age.
